Within my major interest in fostering children’s connections to nature and their development as earth stewards, I am focusing more and more on the question of how to foster ecoliteracy. The challenge is this: to understand how nature works, one must think about systems. But to think about systems doesn’t come easy to children (or even to most adults). However, there is reason to believe that children can, with proper supports, develop an intuitive understanding of nature’s systems. And so, I am working with others to figure out and produce those “proper supports” for children to become ecoliterate.
